Design Wizard : Composite Member Design

Composite beam design works on a member-by-member basis by creating an Oasys Compos file for each composite beam that you are checking. It includes the load cases and deflection criteria that you specify, along with the beam and slab properties, from the GSA model.

Definition

Analysis of combination cases

You must select construction and final dead and live load combinations to be send to Compos. You have two options:

  1. Explicit ULS and SLS load combinations: Set up 8 different load combinations (4 ULS and 4 SLS) and assign them to the appropriate Compos load combinations using the dropdowns.
  2. Automatically factored ULS combinations: When you select the "Derive ULS loads by applying code-specified partial factors to analysis results." checkbox, you can specify unfactored load combinations in the ULS section. You can then select "Taken from ULS" in the SLS section to use these same load cases for SLS, or select different load combinations if you prefer.

Depending on which option you select, the factors shown on screen will update to reflect how the loads are factored before passing them on to Oasys Compos.

Deflection limits

The deflection limits and construction method specified here will be applied to each Compos file that is created.

For details on how these limits are applied, refer to the Oasys Compos documentation.

Design option

The construction method can be defined as propped or unpropped. Refer to Oasys Compos documentation for details on how this information is applied.
